INCIDIN
Bangladesh
INCIDIN Bangladesh launched its program
in 1995, as a research organization, conducting Participatory Action Research
(PAR) with an ethnic (Garo) community in central Bangladesh. Around the same
year two PARs with children had been accomplish. One was about the impact of
the "Harkin's Bill" (against child labor) on the working children
in Bangladesh and the other one was on the sexually exploited street children
of Dhaka city. It is important to mention that in both cases of PAR with children
was an unconventional initiative, as the participants were not the "target"
of mainstream NGOs in Bangladesh.
Organizational
History
Our guiding values of the organization could
be defined as participatory democratic (in the sense that individuals have the
right to participate in decisions that affect their lives), collectiveness,
consensus, trust and social responsibility. Due to the activist background of
the founders the core value concern is not to be bureaucratic and hierarchical.
Value
base
Although INCIDIN Bangladesh is a research
and advocacy organization with a strong focus professional output, our self-perception
goes beyond formal identity. INCIDIN's conceptual position is shaped by the
background of its founders, who have come from student activism, engaged in
the struggle for a democratic Bangladesh. We identify ourselves as part of a
broader movement for overall people's development, as a space for interaction
of development activists and exploration of ideas and action towards societal
transformation for a pluralistic, democratic Bangladesh.
Vision
Identity
Mission
Our
mission is the overall development of the community, with an especial focus
on a balanced and sustainable industrial development.
INCIDIN
Bangladesh envisions a world based on rights and equity based value structures
in Bangladesh following a sustainable strategy of integrated social and economic
development.
Strategy
Action
Research and policy advocacy could be defined as our main strategy to understand
and address the societal problem. To address the issues we are working with
all relevant actors in formal and informal networks, in a concerted way.
Role
We
perceive ourselves as facilitator, motivator, advocate of the process, not as
a service provider. That means we are seeing ourselves in the role of activists
who will address theoretical - conceptual issues to have strategic impact on
the life and livelihood of the marginalized people.
